MXTS 2010 Preview: Movits!
Are you familiar with the game I Never? It’s very simple. I say “I never…yadda yadda yadda” and if you have, raise your hand, take a swill of whatever you’ve got nearby, yelp at the computer screen, anything to identify yourself. Here we go-I Never saw a Swedish, Swing, Hip Hop band. Anyone? Maybe a few of you caught the Movits! performance on the Colbert Report that catapulted them into the American lexicon, but i would bet for a lot of you, Swedish, Swing, and Hip Hop all in the same sentence make you scratch your head. Well, in a few weeks, you’ll have a chance to check out these three well dressed, bespectacled lads from Lulea, Sweden do their thing at our MXTS day party.
Johan Rensfeldt, Jocke Nilsson, and Anders Rensfeldt fuse good old big band sound with punchy hip hop lyrics. So what if the words are in Swedish? Music, especially their music, transcends language barriers and leave us with the feeling that “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing)”. They’re debut album Appelknyckarjazz, translated as Apple Swiper Jazz, was put out in 2008, and with influences the likes of Django Reinhardt, Buena Vista Social Club, and Cab Calloway, it’s not hard to imagine a rollicking live show. Check out videos on their Myspace page. You’ve got just enough time to dust off your best pair of saddle shoes or Adidas Shell Toes, take your Zoot Suit to the cleaners, call your favorite dance partner and sharpen your moves, and come check these guys out Friday, March 19.
