MXTS 2011 Preview: Sea of Bees

Posted in Music and other Arts by Tara Bouley on February 18, 2011

Sea of Bees is the musical moniker of songwriter Julie Ann Baenziger aka Julie Bee. Her songs are honest and earnest, her voice rings delicate yet assured, supported by well-chosen arrangements that are sometimes spare, sometimes layered and dreamy. While searching for a live video to include, I made the pleasant discovery that the full beauty of her voice is exemplified in her live performance and makes us even more excited to have her at this year’s Music by the Slice.

Julie taught herself how to play every instrument on her first recording, and EP called ‘Bee Ee Pee,’ shortly thereafter writing an album’s worth of music. ‘Songs for the Ravens,’ Sea of Bees 2010 debut album, is solid from beginning to end. The songs weave you through a forest of personal but relatable stories. The stories are those of heartbreak, distance and longing but are always imbued with a sense of hope. They seem to say that through all life’s trials, you can trust that the universe will provide.

“I’m not entirely sure why I love this album so much… …That which I cannot put my finger on, is the mysterious, wonderful, and addictive qualities of this album as a whole. Bravo to Jules and her Sea of Bees.” -Jason Lytle (Grandaddy, Admiral Radley)

Sea of Bees will be performing at Music by the Slice Friday, March 18th at 5:15 PM. Full line up coming soon.
