MXTS 2011 Wrap up

Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz, March 19 2011

“Well, that was interesting.”

Kyle Morton of Typhoon at the conclusion of their semi acoustic set.

That pretty much sums up how we feel too.  HSP Co-Owner Joseph Strickland here with a recap of Music by the Slice 2011, definitely the most unique one we’ve done yet.

This was our 6th year hosting this party and it definitely did not lack for excitement!  From the thrill of seeing Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson share a stage for only the 2nd time ever, to the unexpected delight of completely unplugged sets from Versus, Lost in the Trees, Apex Manor, Fredrik and The Boxer Rebellion among others, there was never a dull moment in the 3 days of this year’s party.

Although our issues getting a sound permit from the city – and subsequent need to unplug at times – were not something we’d ever like to experience again, it did lead to some of the most amazing performances we’ve seen in our 6 years hosting this party.   And thanks to the generosity of our rad sponsors, the thirst of the beer and beverage buying public, cooperation from the weather Gods, the generosity of our friends and staff members who offered up their acoustic instruments, and most importantly  the willingness of the artists to DIG DEEP, throwing away their rehearsed sets to improvise, acoustically on the fly, we were able to raise 10 thousand dollars for our charity: YouthLaunch’s Urban Roots program!!!!

So all in all, we are psyched with how it all turned out and wouldn’t change a thing, except maybe the volume!

Thanks to everyone who had anything to do with making this happen, we love you all!!!

We are thrilled to announce that our partnership with The Ship Recording Studio is continuing for the fourth consecutive year! The Ship is a Los Angeles based recording studio, record label, and live series founded in 2000 and owned and operated by producer/musician Aaron Espinoza. The Ship Sessions is a live series heard on XM/Sirius and online at

Jason Lytle was recorded for a Ship Session at Music by the Slice in 2009. Though the years, The Ship continually comes correct, bringing artists like Jason Lytle, Admiral Radley, Flosstradamus, The Watson Twins, Earlimart and The Henry Clay People.  This year we will be featuring The Submarines, Kimya Dawson, Nico Stai and an exclusive performance by Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz.

Aesop Rock is a NY born and raised  hip hop artist/producer currently living in San Francisco. Aesop has recently completed a side project album under the name Hail Mary Mallon, featuring Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz.  Aesop has also been collaborating with singer/songwriter Kimya Dawson.  Their upcoming tour as “A Night with Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawson: also featuring Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz” will feature Kimya Dawson solo, Aesop Rock and Rob Sonic solo material, and songs off the new Hail Mary Mallon record as well as collaborations between Aesop Rock and Kimya Dawason.

Kimya Dawson is an Olympia WA based singer songwriter widely known for her duo with Adam Green called  Moldy Peaches and their Grammy winning platinum selling soundtrack for the movie JUNO. Kimya recently finished recording her 7th solo album and is currently collaborating on an untitled side project with Aesop Rock.  She will be touring with Aesop Rock, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz in May/June.

Nico Stai was born and raised in Spain and moved to Los Angeles where he started various bands prior to launching his solo career in 2006.  He has self released one album and two EPs and had music featured on multiple tv shows including Gossip Girl, Chuck, Private Practice, etc. Journalists have drawn comparisons to early Bruce Springsteen, Conor O’Berst and Nick Drake.  Nico has performed at a variety of festivals including Bonaroo, Noise Pop, Sunset Junction, etc.  He will be recording his new album with producer/musician Aaron Espinoza at the Ship studio in Los Angeles April/May 2011.

And of course we talked a little about our old friends The Submarines in our welcome back post last week.  These guys need no introduction, but in case you need a reminder, you may recognize this song from an advertisement for a product you may be have heard of.
